How did I get into tracing my Family tree?

It really stems back to a debate in my Family about where We originally come from, My Father always said we were Scottish but, my Aunt said she was told her Grandfather was Irish. So finding some time on my hands I decided to try and find out. I knew nothing of genealogy and started from scratch, All of my research has been conducted on the internet, a substantial part of which is actually free. though I have used some pay sites. So after only a years worth of research the fruits of my labour can be seen on My Tree Page. I've still not discovered wether we came from Scotland or Ireland but, My GG Grandfather wasn't Irish he was born in Hampstead, in Fact I have the McDonalds  going back to at least 1714 living in Whitechapel.  If you are interested in tracing your own family then please let me know and I'll set you in the right direction, or help if you get stuck, My Forums also have a section devoted to Genealogy its free to register and use so please join.
